Age-Adjusted Hospitalization rate due to Assault by Firearms

Measurement Period: 2019-2021
This indicator shows the age-adjusted hospitalization rate per 10,000 population due to firearms. Cases include first-listed diagnosis is injury by assault and undetermined intent by firearms.

Why is this important?

In the 1980s, gun violence became a national concern and continues to be serious problem to this day. According to the National Institute of Justice, initial federal gun crime prevention efforts focused on getting illegal guns off the streets and out of the hands of urban youth. However, over 20 years of intervention research has shown that in order to reduce gun violence, efforts must address both the demand and supply of firearms. Successful interventions have elements of collaboration between federal and local law enforcement and community groups using targeted intervention tactics.
