Rethink Your Drink / Choose Healthy Drinks

A Good Idea

Description

Rethink your Drink is a collaborative effort of San Francisco Bay Area counties. Since 2008, the campaign has encouraged Bay Area residents to reduce their sugary drink consumption through their website, choosehealthydrinks.org. The site provides information to help consumers make informed decisions about their drink choices, including how to read nutrition labels, the sugar content of commonly consumed beverages, and the health effects of high sugar intake.

The initiative is funded by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's Community Transformation Grant program to improve the health of communities across the nation. The campaign is associated with Alameda County Public Health Department's Soda Free Summer campaign.

Goal / Mission

The goal of the Rethink your Drink campaign is to prevent chronic diseases like obesity, type 2 diabetes, and heart disease by reducing sugary drink consumption.

Impact

Rethink your Drink is increasing public awareness of the health effects of consuming sugary beverages.

Results / Accomplishments

The accomplishments of Rethink your Drink include the following: organizational policies to eliminate sugary drinks from local workplaces, summer camps, and child care centers; a decrease in sugary drink consumption among 2-11 year olds; and an increased awareness of the impact of sugary drink consumption.
