Jamaica Service Program for Older Adults

A Good Idea

Description

The Jamaica Service Program for Older Adults (JSPOA) is a multi-service social service agency in Southeast Queens, New York. The agency sponsors three senior centers which provide a variety of services to enhance the quality of life for senior adults, including hot meals, educational programs, health promotion, and socialization opportunities. The agency also provides referrals and counseling for entitlement programs, a senior employment program, assistance for crime or abuse victims, and transportation for medical appointments and other needs.

Goal / Mission

The Jamaica Service Program for Older Adults mission is "a total community working together to provide services to, and develop skills in, older adults in order to promote independence and enhance their quality of life."

Results / Accomplishments

Each year, JSPOA services over 5,000 adults directly and reaches another 15,000 people indirectly. The JSPOA Friendship Center exclusively serves a population of mentally and physically frail older adults (60+) who have become socially isolated and partially dependent upon others for their daily living. The Rockaway Boulevard Senior Center provides breakfast and lunch daily, as well as a wide variety of classes. The Theodora G. Jackson Adult Center aims to foster physical, spiritual, mental, economic and social well-being of older adults through service and creative expression.
