Teens who do not Drink Soda or Pop

Measurement Period: 2021-2022
This indicator shows the percentage of high school students who did not drink a can, bottle, or glass of soda or pop during the past seven days.

Why is this important?

According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture's 2015-2020 Dietary Guidelines, sugar-sweetened beverages (SSBs) account for more than one-third of all foods with added sugars that are consumed in the United States. Adolscents are the highest consumers of SSBs. Non-diet sodas or SSBs have large amounts of added sugar, lack nutritional value, and are great calorie contributors in adolescent diets. The consumption of sugary drinks is associated with weight gain and obesity. Reducing SSB consumption can result in a decrease in weight and is an important element of obesity prevention.
